In her digital illustrations, Johanna Kügerl primarily showcases architecturally or communally distinctive buildings and entertainment venues in Budapest. She is curious about why people become attached to certain urban spaces and how they shape them to their own image – whether they are pubs, cafes, or cinemas.
Another important theme is our collective memory, the symbolic objects of past decades that we look back on with nostalgia. A central role is given to the props and settings of meals, the human connections hidden in the details of shared meals, whether it's soup sent in a jar or messages left in alphabet pasta.
In addition, she likes to try out new genres, be it embroidery, crochet, or ceramic painting, so the interested observer can always find some unique, experimental piece.
